DCI's Court documents Reveal How Seth Mwabe Hacked Betika and other Platforms and stole Millions of Money

 


After weeks of painstaking investigations and analysing all seized devices from Seth Mwabe, detectives from the DCI’s Banking Fraud Unit have revealed in their court documents a specialized hacking software that the suspect has been using to break into financial systems of different online platforms. According to the court documents provided by the detectives, the suspect has been using a hacking software called Heracal acquired from a darkweb store of domain ccvccvccv.cc to commit serious financial crimes that has led to the loss of millions of money. 

A 26-year-old university dropout is at the heart of a in which he is accused of hacking into the systems of a leading betting firm and making away with Sh11.4 million.

Seth Mwabe who dropped out of Meru University is accused of orchestrating the heist in July, with the company reporting the suspicious loss of funds to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

Police who broke into the house found a well-established computer laboratory with sophisticated equipment including a safe, a money-counting machine and other gadgets believed to have been used in fraudulent activities by the suspect. Regional Criminal Investigations Officer, Central Region, Abraham Mugambi who led the raid linked the suspect to several fraudulent activities in different companies that usually have many transactions per minute. Mugambi believes the suspect used the same hacking software to carry out his criminal activities unnoticed.

"This year in July, a report was made that a payment service provider had lost Sh32.7 million through fraudulent means. Investigations commenced, and DCI teams of experts established that the fraud was committed after the individual bypassed the security systems of the company" Mugambi stated.

Mwabe who identified himself as a cyber security engineer confirmed that he dropped out of university at second year and has ben plying his trade since then.

He told detectives that he has been in the game since 2017 and dropped out of Meru University without delving into the details of his operations.

“I am a cyber security engineer so this is what I do” Mwabe told the police during the raid.

The suspect refused to grant access to the officers who camped outside his apartment, leading to a forceful entry.

Mwabe clarified that what he has been involved in is consultancy with what was found in his house being the equipment he uses in his consultancy gigs.

“I am an independent consultant; I get contracted by different entities.” Mwabe told detectives.

Seth Mwabe was released on an Sh500,000 bond on September 3 after the court ruled that detectives failed to provide adequate grounds to continue holding the suspect, who was arrested at his apartment in Tatu City, Kiambu County, on August 30 by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

While granting bond, Magistrate Ben Mark Ekubi cautioned Mwabe against interfering with the ongoing probe into the high-profile cyber fraud case.
